The psychic triangle.

Think about the last time you had a really successful demonstration when everything flowed and your confidence soared. If you are brand new to mediumship, think back to experiences where you felt the communion of spirit more intensely than at other times.

What factors were present then? Did you notice something happening within yourself? Perhaps the location of the experience was exceptional, or the sitter was extremely in tune with your work?

I can recall a time when a spirit communicator was especially generous with her information, ending with a message that the sitter really needed to hear.

The best demonstrations of survival depend on three factors being in harmony: the medium, the spirit communicator, and the recipient.

Imagine these three parts as the sides of the psychic triangle, with the medium at the base, the spirit communicator to their left and the recipient rising up to meet Spirit on the right. The medium is the band connecting the incarnate and discarnate, and through their natural communication style, at the apex of the sitting, the two souls meet.

William Walker Atkinson described the psychic triangle in “Genuine Mediumship.” He said that these elements should “dwell together on the plane of common agreement.” Furthermore

“[I]t is essential that a harmony and sympathy between all three sides of the triangle should be preserved and maintained. Therefore, sitters at the circle should endeavor to do their part in producing and maintaining such harmony with both the medium, the spirits, and finally with each other--and this last is not the least, by any means. Unless there be at least a very fair degree of harmony between the several members constituting the circle, there will be something important lacking in their harmony of the circle as a whole toward the other two sides of the psychical triangle.

Truly, it all comes down to establishing harmony in the room you’re in, whether it’s a brick and mortar meeting hall or an internet chat room.

The spiritual world is one of harmony, and often harmony on the earth plane can be elevated by the group singing, praying, chanting or even counting aloud in unison.

There is strength in union. But what can you do if you sense a lack of harmony? I like to keep my focus on Spirit. I’m visually oriented, so I imagine holding Spirit close to my heart center like the girl in the graphic at the top of this post.

She represents the medium who cradles a bluebird, or the spirit communicator, in her hands. This shows the desired closeness of a medium’s and Spirit communicator’s energies. I imagine the recipient as the other bird sitting beside her, raptly engaged with the words the medium feeds him from Spirit. Although everything she gets from Spirit is for the recipient, the medium is not focused on the recipient; of course, she hears his twitterings, but her eyes are on Spirit all the time.

May the concept of the psychic triangle help you keep your focus on Spirit. Know that clear, natural communication will eventually cause Spirit’s energy and the energy of their recipient to merge at the apex of your time together, through mutual harmony, attention, and love.
