The human soul needs beauty more than bread. ~ D. H. Lawrence
This Lawrence quote should not be taken literally. Of course, we cannot survive without food!
Our real nourishment is love. Beauty and love are indistinguishable.
The experience of falling in love centers on losing oneself in the other. It’s an amazing feeling, and we cherish it. The same thing happens when we experience beauty. We lose our sense of self as we perceive beauty.
Objects themselves aren’t beautiful. It’s how we take them in that gives us the connection we crave.
We love what is beautiful and what is beautiful is love. We praise beauty because losing the sense of self feels so grand, so peaceful, so eternal.
These are the same words we use to describe our relationship to God.
Our souls yearn for something beautiful to lose ourselves in every day. It doesn’t have to be high art, a poem, or an expensive bouquet of roses.
Whatever you find to be beautiful, be it a mathematical formula, a run down the path, or a loaf of bread, relax into that infinite peace that is in the enjoyment of losing yourself.
