On happiness.

This quote from Henry David Thoreau has been with me all day:

“My desire for knowledge is intermittent; but my desire to bathe my head in atmospheres unknown to my feet is perennial and constant.”

I took that to mean Thoreau wanted to revel in non-mundane matters, to elevate his mood. In other words, to be happy.

In our modern world of instant access to knowledge and heart-wrenching headlines, our minds are constantly fed with factoids and information. Is that good for us?

What each of us on this planet knows is that we are aware. And what our eternal consciousness constantly desires is exactly what Thoreau desired: to bathe in the light, bright, atmosphere of happiness.

This morning I transcribed a conversation between my non-duality teacher Rupert Spira and a retreatant who asked about free will and choice.

Although it appears that we have free will, Rupert said, it is only because we are agents of God. The freedom we feel is the freedom of consciousness. “Creativity is freedom. That is the freedom of infinite consciousness expressing itself in, as, and through the finite mind.”

When we tap into our creativity, we feel refreshed, connected, alive. The feeling is God pulling us back to source of love, to the creative source of all that is. That source is peace and happiness itself.

Even people who feel like they’re not creative can tap into this beautiful experience. Staring up into the clouds, even so called non-creative types can find shapes and make connections in their lives that others can understand as well.

If you feel love and appreciate beauty, you, awareness, are experiencing yourself.

Let your head bathe in atmospheres unknown to your feet. Allow your awareness to rest within itself, to find that core of eternal peace and happiness where there are no phones ringing, no emails to write, no people demanding your time.

Even if just for a short while, ride the spontaneity of the moment and allow creativity to shine in your day.
